Anchovies for Dogs (and Cats): Benefits, Omega-3 and How Many to Give

Dried anchovies are small, crunchy, low-mercury fish with natural omega-3. Benefits, safe amounts and tips for dogs and cats.

Dried anchovies are one of the simplest fish treats there is: a small whole fish, dried until crunchy, with nothing added. Dogs and cats both tend to love them, and they bring some useful nutrition along with the crunch.

Can dogs eat anchovies?

Yes. Plain, unsalted dried anchovies are a suitable treat for most healthy dogs and cats. What to avoid are anchovies sold for people: tinned in oil or brine, salted, or in sauces. These carry far too much salt for pets.

Benefits of anchovies for dogs

  • Omega-3 fats. Like other oily fish, anchovies contain EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fats most associated with healthy skin and a glossy coat. Dogs and cats cannot make enough of these themselves, so they come from food.
  • Low in mercury. Mercury builds up in large, long-lived predatory fish. Anchovies are small and sit low in the food chain, so they carry far less than fish like tuna.
  • Calcium from soft bones. They are eaten whole, and the tiny bones are soft once dried, adding natural calcium.
  • Protein-rich and small. Their size makes them easy to portion, including for cats and small dogs.

Are anchovies good for cats?

Cats are strict carnivores, and fish is a natural fit as an occasional treat. Treats should stay within about 10% of a cat's daily food. One or two small anchovies is a generous treat for most cats.

How many anchovies can I give my dog?

  • Cats and small dogs: 1–2 small fish a day.
  • Medium and large dogs: a few more, within the 10% treat guideline.

Start with one the first time. Fish is rich, and a slow start helps you see how your pet's stomach copes.

Anchovies vs sardines vs tuna

Anchovies and sardines are both small, oily, low-mercury fish and good everyday fish treats. Tuna is a larger fish that carries more mercury, so vets suggest keeping it occasional.

When to skip anchovies

Skip them if your pet has a known fish allergy. Check with your vet first if your pet is on a prescribed or low-fat diet or has kidney or other medical concerns.

Quick answers

Are dried anchovies too salty for dogs?

Not if they are plain and unsalted. Pet-treat anchovies should list only one ingredient: anchovies.

Do anchovies help a dog's coat?

They contain omega-3 fats, which are linked to skin and coat health. Results vary with the whole diet, and treats are an extra, not a fix.

Can puppies eat anchovies?

Healthy puppies can try a single small fish. Keep the amount small.
