Chicken Jerky for Dogs: A Simple Training Treat, Explained

Single-ingredient chicken jerky is one of the easiest treats to use for training. What is in it, how much to give by dog size, and how to store it.

Chicken jerky is the treat most dog parents reach for first: familiar, crunchy and easy to snap into small rewards. Here is what to look for and how to use it well.

What is chicken jerky?

Good chicken jerky is just chicken breast, sliced thin and dried slowly at low heat. That is all our pouch lists: "100% Real Chicken Breast." No salt, sugar, glycerine, flavourings or preservatives.

Many shop-bought "jerky" treats in India are made from mixed meat, flour or starch, held together with binders and coloured to look like meat. Turn the pack over: if the ingredient list is longer than one line, it is not single-ingredient jerky.

Why it works well for training

  • Snaps into small pieces. Our jerky is thin and crunchy, so one strip becomes many pea-sized rewards.
  • Strong smell. Drying concentrates the aroma, which helps hold attention outdoors or around other dogs.
  • Lean muscle meat. Chicken breast is a lean, protein-rich cut.
  • Familiar. Most dogs already eat chicken, so it is an easy first treat for new dogs and puppies.

How much chicken jerky can a dog have?

The feeding guide on our pouch:

  • Small dogs: 2–3 pieces a day
  • Medium dogs: 3–4 pieces a day
  • Large dogs: 4–5 pieces a day

For a training session, break each piece into smaller bits so the same amount lasts for many repetitions. Keep all treats within about 10% of your dog's daily food, and trim meals slightly on heavy training days.

Is chicken jerky okay for puppies?

Yes, broken into very small pieces once your puppy is eating solid food comfortably. Introduce one new food at a time, supervise, and keep water nearby.

When to choose something else

Chicken is one of the more common food sensitivities in dogs. If you notice itching, ear scratching or loose stools, pause chicken and try a different protein such as Buff Jerky or Goat Lungs, and speak to your vet if it continues.

Storage

Use within 15 days of opening, and keep it in the original pouch or an airtight container. Best before 12 months from the month of manufacture.

Where to buy
