Goat Trachea for Dogs: A Crunchy Cartilage Chew Explained

Goat trachea is a ridged, crunchy chew made of cartilage, with no bone. What it offers, how it compares with bone chews, and how to give it safely.

Goat trachea (the windpipe) is a favourite with dogs that love to crunch but are better off without hard bone. It is light, ridged and satisfying to work through.

What is goat trachea?

The trachea is the tube that carries air to the lungs. It is made of rings of cartilage joined by soft tissue. Slowly dehydrated with nothing added, it becomes a crunchy, hollow chew. Each piece varies a little in length and thickness.

Benefits of trachea for dogs

  • Natural cartilage. Cartilage naturally contains glucosamine and chondroitin. Many owners choose cartilage chews for this reason, but a chew is a treat, not a replacement for joint supplements or care your vet recommends.
  • No bone. Trachea crunches rather than splinters like bone, so it is a popular middle ground between soft treats and hard chews.
  • Something to work on. The ridges give dogs something to grip and gnaw, which keeps them busy and calm.
  • Single ingredient. Just goat, which helps if your dog does better on simple food.

Trachea vs bone chews

Hard bone chews such as trotters last longer but carry more risk to teeth. Trachea is softer and finished sooner, which suits more dogs, including many small and medium breeds. If your dog is a careful, steady chewer, trachea is a good first chew to try.

How to give it safely

  • Choose a piece your dog can't fit fully in its mouth.
  • Stay nearby while your dog chews.
  • Take it away once the remaining piece is small enough to swallow whole.
  • Skip it for dogs that gulp their food.
  • Keep fresh water out, and count it as part of the day's food.

How often?

One piece per chew session, a few times a week, works well for most dogs. Treats and chews together should stay within about 10% of daily food.

Where to buy
