A goat trotter is one of the longest-lasting natural chews you can give a dog. It is also one of the hardest. That makes it brilliant for some dogs and the wrong choice for others. Here is how to tell which group your dog is in.
What is a goat trotter?
A trotter is the lower leg and foot of a goat: skin, tendon, cartilage and bone, slowly dehydrated with nothing added. Drying makes it shelf-stable and very firm. Size and weight vary from piece to piece, because every animal is different.
Why dogs love them
- Long chew time. A strong chewer can work on a trotter for a long time, which helps restless dogs settle while you work or cook.
- Skin and tendon. These parts are naturally rich in collagen, and the chewy texture keeps dogs interested.
- One ingredient. Just goat, nothing else, so it suits dogs that do better on simple foods.
The honest part: risks of hard chews
Vets see dogs with broken teeth from chewing very hard items, and bone pieces can cause choking or a blockage if swallowed. Dehydrated bones are dried, not cooked, but no bone chew is risk-free. A trotter is a chew to give with care, not a snack to hand over and walk away from.
Skip trotters if your dog:
- is a puppy, a small breed, or an older dog with worn, cracked or missing teeth;
- gulps food or tries to swallow chews whole;
- has had dental work, a blockage or a sensitive stomach;
- has a medical condition or special diet (ask your vet first).
How to give a goat trotter safely
- Stay nearby the whole time.
- Keep sessions short. Let your dog chew for a while, then pick it up and store it for next time.
- Take it away when it gets small enough to swallow whole, or if it splinters or develops sharp edges.
- Keep fresh water out.
- Count it as food. Keep all treats and chews within about 10% of your dog's daily food.
How often?
One trotter per session, no more than a few times a week, is plenty for most medium and large dogs.
A gentler alternative
If a trotter sounds too hard for your dog, try Goat Trachea: a crunchy cartilage chew with no bone, or Goat Ear for small dogs and gentle chewers.
