The Hidden Truth About What's Really in Your Dog's Treat

We decoded 12 popular Indian dog treat labels. Fillers, artificial colours, chemical preservatives — and why dehydrated treats are the answer.

What's Really in That Packet?

Next time you pick up a popular dog treat from the supermarket, read past the bright packaging and look at the ingredient list. Most Indian dog parents are shocked at what they find: meat and bone meal, corn starch, sodium tripolyphosphate, BHA, BHT, Colour E129. These are not food ingredients — they are industrial processing aids, chemical preservatives, and synthetic dyes.

We analysed 12 of the most popular commercial dog treat brands sold in India. Of those, 10 had a grain filler in the first three ingredients. Only 2 listed a single, identifiable whole protein as the primary ingredient.

WHAT WE FOUND IN 12 BRANDS
The Commercial Treat Label Audit
83%
Had grain filler as one of first 3 ingredients
75%
Contained artificial colours or flavour enhancers
67%
Listed chemical preservatives (BHA or BHT)
17%
Had a single whole protein as primary ingredient ✓

The Three Hidden Culprits

Beyond generic fillers, three specific ingredients appear repeatedly in commercial treats and deserve special attention from every dog parent.

AVOID
BHA & BHT (Chemical Preservatives)Classified as possible carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Added to prevent fat rancidity — an issue that does not exist in naturally preserved dehydrated treats.
AVOID
Artificial Colour E129 (Allura Red)A synthetic red dye added purely for human visual appeal. Dogs cannot distinguish the colour red. It serves zero nutritional purpose and is linked to hyperactivity and allergic reactions.
AVOID
Corn Syrup Solids & Flavour EnhancersAdded to mask the taste of low-quality protein substitutes. If the base ingredient were genuinely good meat, enhancers would be unnecessary. Their presence is a red flag about what they are hiding.

The Three Pillars of a Better Treat

Dehydrated single-ingredient treats address all three problems simultaneously — not through clever marketing, but through the fundamental simplicity of what they are.

🛡️
Pillar 1
Nutritional Integrity
Low heat (55–70°C) preserves proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. High-heat baking destroys up to 50% of nutrients.
💧
Pillar 2
Uncompromising Purity
Removing moisture makes the treat naturally shelf-stable. Zero chemical preservatives, zero artificial colours, zero flavour enhancers needed.
🦷
Pillar 3
Functional Well-being
Chewy textures naturally scrub teeth. Real meat flavour eliminates the need for artificial enhancers. Longer shelf life without refrigeration.

The Nutrient Retention Difference

The processing temperature is the single most important factor in determining how much nutritional value survives from raw ingredient to finished treat.

Dehydration (55–70°C)
95%
Nutrients retained
High-Heat Baking (150–200°C)
50%
Nutrients retained
Collagen and glucosamine in joint treats are particularly sensitive to high heat and are fully preserved only through dehydration.

How to Choose: The 4-Point Checklist

  • Single ingredient: Is the ingredient list one item long? If not, ask why.
  • Human-grade source: Is the meat quality fit for human consumption? Always choose brands that can confirm this.
  • Visibly real: Does the treat look like the animal it came from? Dehydrated chicken should look like chicken. If it is a uniform brown pellet, ask what happened to the original food.
  • Chemical-free: Are there any preservatives, colours or flavour enhancers listed? If yes, put it back.
The Game of Bones standard: Every product we make passes all four tests. Single ingredient. Human-grade meat from Indian farms. Visibly real. Zero chemicals. The name on the front is the only thing inside.
