India's humidity — especially during monsoon season — is the number one enemy of shelf-stable treats. Here's how to keep your dehydrated treats fresh and safe.
Before Opening
Unopened pouches are good for up to 6 months when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing near the stove, window, or anywhere temperature fluctuates significantly.
After Opening
Jerky and bite-sized treats last 4-6 weeks at room temperature if properly resealed after each use. Press out excess air before sealing — this single step dramatically extends freshness.
Fish and Organ Treats
These have higher natural fat content and are more sensitive to humidity. Once opened, refrigerate and use within 2-3 weeks for best quality. During peak monsoon months (June-September), consider refrigerating even before opening if your storage area isn't climate controlled.
Signs of Spoilage
A sour or rancid smell (different from the treat's natural aroma), visible mould, or a sudden change in texture (excessive softness or stickiness) all indicate the treat should be discarded.
Monsoon-Specific Tips
Use an airtight container as a second layer of protection over the resealed pouch. Silica gel packets (food-safe) can help absorb ambient moisture in humid coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
